A synthetic view of rainfall intensification in the West African Sahel

چکیده
Abstract The West African Sahel has been facing for more than 30 years an increase in extreme rainfall with strong socio-economic impacts. This situation challenges decision-makers to define adaptation strategies a rapidly changing climate. present study proposes (i) quantitative characterization of the trends at regional scale, (ii) translation into metrics that can be used by hydrological risk managers, (iii) elements understanding link between climatology and mean rainfall. Based on non-stationary statistical model applied in-situ daily data over period 1983–2015, we show region-wide increasing trend is highly significant. change value distribution reflects both variability, producing 5%/decade intensity whatever return period. framework provides operational revising design methods hydraulic structures which most often assume stationary Finally, shows annual maxima attributable stronger storm intensities (80%) frequent occurrences (20%), reflecting major regime shift comparison those observed region since 1950.

متن کاملHow Does Gender Affect Sustainable Intensification of Cereal Production in the West African Sahel? Evidence from Burkina Faso
Better understanding of gender differences in the adoption of agricultural intensification strategies is crucial for designing effective policies to close the gender gap while sustainably enhancing farm productivity. We examine gender differences in adoption rates, likelihood and determinants of adopting strategy sets that enhance yields, protect crops, and restore soils in the West African Sah...
متن کاملThe stable hydrogen isotopic composition of sedimentary plant waxes as quantitative proxy for rainfall in the West African Sahel
Various studies have demonstrated that the stable hydrogen isotopic composition (dD) of terrestrial leaf waxes tracks that of precipitation (dDprecip) both spatially across climate gradients and over a range of different timescales. Yet, reconstructed estimates of dDprecip and corresponding rainfall typically remain largely qualitative, due mainly to uncertainties in plant ecosystem net fractio...
متن کاملNon-linear intensification of Sahel rainfall as a possible dynamic response to future warming
Abstract. Projections of the response of Sahel rainfall to future global warming diverge significantly. Meanwhile, paleoclimatic records suggest that Sahel rainfall is capable of abrupt transitions in response to gradual forcing. Here we present climate modeling evidence for the possibility of an abrupt intensification of Sahel rainfall under future climate change. Analyzing 30 coupled global c...
